School 33 Art Center

1427 Light St Baltimore, MD 21230 www.school33.org

Formerly P.S. 33, the 1890 brick building served as an elementary school until 1975 when a new school was built a few blocks away. The South Baltimore Community Committee requested that Mayor Donald Schaefer revitalize the abandoned building. Inspired by the success of MOMA’s P.S. 1 in Long Island City and the trend of alternative space programs, the mayor proposed the creation of School 33 Art Center. Following an extensive two-year restoration, the School 33 Art Center was established in 1979 and became Baltimore City’s original alternative space for contemporary art. The center hosts exhibitions, provides studios for artists and teaches classes for adults and children. Visit their new eco-friendly outdoor garden, three galleries with rotating art exhibits and nine resident studio artists. Please enter through the Clement Street garden entrance.
