The American Can Company in Canton was a dominant 20th-century industrial site, founded in 1901 and becoming the nation’s largest can manufacturer. Located at Boston and Hudson Streets, it produced food cans and, during wartime, defense materials, employing nearly 900 people at its peak. The facility closed in the 1980s before being redeveloped into a vibrant mixed-use center in the late 1990s. Now through Reba Holdings, the site has become a multi-use campus with an artist hub, restaurants, and businesses, continuing its use.
Through the creative reuse of the historic building, BLIFTD offers artists the space and programming to achieve the visibility and professionalism necessary for sustainable art careers, creating new access points to art resources and networks that were historically available only through Baltimore’s traditional art institutions.
