St. Luke’s is a historic one-acre campus in West Baltimore centered around two surviving stone buildings: the church and the clergy house. Together, they tell a layered Baltimore story through architecture, faith, race, neighborhood change, and community resilience. Founded in 1847, the church was built in phases beginning in the 1850s and reflects the beauty and ambition of nineteenth-century Baltimore architecture. Its history also reflects the legacy of slavery and segregation, making it part of a larger American story about how historic places can embody both beauty and injustice.
The clergy house, built in 1904 as a residence for clergy, represents a later chapter in the life of the campus and the important role church institutions once played in neighborhood life. The mission of St. Luke’s continues today through Saint Luke’s Youth Center, which operates out of partner church spaces while working to complete the fundraising needed to return to and reactivate the campus for children and families in West Baltimore. During Doors Open Baltimore, visitors will be able to tour the clergy house and experience a virtual tour of the church building, offering a chance to engage both the site’s history and its future.
