About the Tour

Tour the chapel and other historical rooms of the Oblate Sisters of Providence’s Our Lady of Mount Providence convent. The convent on Gun Road in Baltimore County was constructed in 1961 as the new mother house for the Oblates, the first religious order for African American women. Established in Baltimore in 1829 by Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange and Sulpician Father James Hector Nicholas Joubert, SS, the order’s mission was focused on teaching and caring for African American children. The tour will share the storied history of the Oblates, chronicled in the beautiful stained glass windows of the midcentury modern chapel, and describe the cause for canonization of Venerable Mother Mary Lange, whose relics were transferred to the mother house in 2013.
