Baltimore School for the Arts is housed in two historic buildings in Mount Vernon: the landmark Alcazar building and the William H. Graham House. The Alcazar opened in 1924 as a hotel and ballroom for the Knights of Columbus, becoming a popular gathering place for dances, performances, and social events. In 1979, the City acquired the building for the newly established Baltimore School for the Arts.
Next door, the mid-19th-century Graham House at 704 Cathedral Street was commissioned by George Brown for his son-in-law, William H. Graham, a director of the prominent Alex. Brown & Sons banking firm. The house later became apartments and was famously home to writer and journalist H.L. Mencken and his wife in the 1930s. BSA acquired the brownstone in 2008, connecting it to the Alcazar as part of a major campus expansion.
Today, these historic spaces have been transformed into studios, rehearsal rooms, theaters, galleries, and classrooms where Baltimore’s next generation of artists learn and create.
